Beyond the Windows

Taking inspiration from architectural shapes and textures of the weathered buildings, abstracting and layering in found papers and incorporating other materials from the Derbyshire Textile mills such as thread, fabric, wood and metal.

The work highlights people’s experiences and the history of the mills, evokes memories and aims to encourage people to visit the mills who perhaps wouldn’t have considered it before.

BEYOND THE WINDOWS COLLECTION

Beyond the Windows is a deeply personal collection that reflects my passion for exploring the stories and histories that are embedded within the mills. By piecing together fragments of collage papers and adding in thread and fabric, I have created layered abstract works that evoke memories of the mills and the people who worked there. Through my art, I hope to transport viewers back in time, creating a sense of connection to the past while also looking forward to the future.

EXHIBITION

My debut solo exhibition with work from this collection was held from 6th July - 23rd August 2023 at No. 28 in Belper and was supported by Fleet Arts. The collection consisted of 20 pieces and the outcome of the drop-in workshop was also displayed alongside my work in the exhibition. A booklet with the artwork, inspiration and all the pieces in the collection can be purchased here.

For a walkthrough of the exhibition take a look at the reels and photos below.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

During the exhibition I held a free drop-in workshop offering the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind mixed media collage tag inspired by the mills, either to take home or or to contribute one to a collaborative piece which was displayed alongside my work in the exhibition!

It was amazing to see everyone excited to have a go, many people just stumbled across the workshop as they came into No.28 in Belper for a cup of tea and left saying they had really enjoyed it and how therapeutic it was to take some time out of their busy day to create something. I was blown away by the time and care spent creating these and the attention to detail. A few of them even had a title and a story behind them. Each one is signed on the back by the artist.

A huge thank you to everybody who contributed to this wonderful collaborative piece and to Fleet Arts for supporting the workshop.
