Through the Frame

A collection of mixed media collages inspired by Ruddington’s historic Framework Knitting Industry. The works explore stories of making, material, and place, reflecting both the architecture of the cottages and the lives shaped by the industry. Using layered papers, fabrics, and stitching, the collages capture the textures of work, home, and community, offering a contemporary response to this important part of Nottinghamshire’s heritage.

THROUGH THE FRAME COLLECTION

The idea for these pieces developed from my research at the Framework Knitting Museum in Ruddington. There, I watched demonstrations of the frames in action, heard their distinctive noise and got a sense of what it was like working in such tightly packed spaces. The pieces reflect on the passage of time and how memories fade,  with a focus on preserving these stories before they disappear.

WALL HANGING WORKSHOP
Framework Knitters Workshop.jpg

A creative workshop inspired by Ruddington’s historic framework knitting industry and one of my pieces in the exhibition. Using a variety of fabrics and papers provided, they designed and assembled a layered hanging with leather straps, wooden elements, and stitched details, echoing the textures and stories of the framework knitting industry.

'I really enjoyed the afternoon. It was a well organised workshop with a lovely balance between instruction and 'go and play'! I am not somebody who always feels comfortable in this type of environment, but your gently encouraging approach put me at ease - so thank you for that.'
